Walks in May 2026

Just two walks this month because of the early and late Bank Holidays, but they were splendid as described

by Enid Blyton and the Famous Five

May 11th

"What a splendid walk it was!" said Steve as the little party of seven set off from Goose Carr Lane, Todwick.

The friends marched briskly along the A57 before turning towards Common Farm at Aston. Beyond the fields, they found themselves walking alongside the great motorway, which stretched away beside them for nearly a mile.

Soon they crossed over and made their way towards Nickerwood Farm. After a cheerful stop for coffee at Aston Park Fisheries, everyone felt ready for the next part of the adventure.

Up they climbed to the church at Aston, standing proudly above the surrounding countryside. Then on they went, passing New South Farm and enjoying the fine views around them.

Before long they crossed the motorway once more. Turning back towards the A57, they followed the final stretch of the route until they arrived at their starting point, pleased with another successful expedition.

"Six miles altogether!" someone exclaimed. "Just the sort of adventure we like best!"

There were only eight of us that morning, for many of the others were away on holiday. Still, that did not matter—adventures are often best with a smaller party!

We set off through the Stones and followed the A57 for a short distance before turning into the peaceful Swinston Woods. The path led us behind the Anston Butterfly House, where we kept a sharp lookout as we walked, chatting and enjoying the fresh air.

At last we reached the village hall, and what a splendid surprise awaited us there! A table groaned with homemade cakes: lemon drizzle, rich chocolate cake, and a mysterious rocky treat that was quite delicious. We all agreed it was the perfect ending to our expedition. Better still, there was plenty left over to take home—a treasure almost as exciting as the walk itself!
