Risk Assessments

The following risk assessments start from the premise that the activities we offer are not unsafe, and many, if not all of the hazards identified will be encountered by members in their daily life. Members are expected to assess their own physical abilities before participating in any activity.

In identifying the hazards across a wide range of our groups we have concluded that many of the hazards encountered are common across the groups, and the control measures needed to mitigate these risks are also common. Therefore we have produced five risk assessments primarily based upon the venue in which the activities takes place.

This assessment is applicable to groups that meet in premises that we hire, such as community centres, church halls and sports centres.

This assessment is applicable to groups that take place in members' homes.

This assessment is applicable day trips to visitor attractions, or town and cities organised by the Travel Group. It would also apply other groups that organise similar trips.

This assessment is applicable to our walking and stroller groups and other group outings such as visits to nature reserves

This assessment is applicable to our Petanque Group because there are specific risks that apply to the game and the environment that are not covered in the other assessments.

Leaders Responsibilities

Leaders are expected to use the assessments to understand which hazards apply to their activity and venue, and put into effect any control measures identified in the risk assessment to their group.

Members Responsibilities

Whilst each risk assessment is intended to manage the risks associated with our activities, members are reminded that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are capable of participating in the activity safely. This is to ensure that they do not endanger themselves or others.

Appended to each risk assessment is the members’ personal risk assessment tool that members might find useful. This personal risk assessment is not intended to be shared with group leaders or others within the u3a: it is to help members decide whether or not they themselves can safely participate in an activity. Any accommodation must be discussed with the relevant group leader.
