Sheffield u3a
Did you know that members of Worksop u3a can also be members of Sheffield u3a for £4 per year?
Sheffield u3a is the largest u3a in the country with about 3000 members and nearly 200 groups. It is however spread across quite a big area so many groups may not be appropriate for Worksop u3a members to join but there are activities that are more easily accessible that you may enjoy.
It is run differently from Worksop because of necessity due to size, and does not have a monthly meeting in the same way. What it does have is a monthly 'drop-in' at the Central United Reform Church in the city centre (near the Crucible), on the first Tuesday of the month 10 am - 12 md. This is open to anyone to go to for free and find out more about groups, membership and anything else u3a related, plus a cup of tea.
There is also a monthly lecture at the Showroom cinema (not far from the station) on the third Friday of the month at 11 am. Sheffield u3a has strong ties with both Sheffield and Hallam universities and has a reciprocal agreement that they will support the universities with research programmes in return for their help with the lecture programmes.
Additionally there is a travel group and other open groups. There are nearly 30 walking groups including a Saturday Strollers group that frequently walks in the area around Worksop, and also a local history group based in Mosborough.
Do look at the Sheffield u3a website and see what is happening. Next year they will celebrate their 40th anniversary and events are being organised. Sheffield u3a cannot be part of the reciprocal agreement that Worksop has with Retford u3a and other local areas as it is over the border in Yorkshire and comes into a different region. However, because Sheffield is so big the annual subs per member work out at only £8 a year at the moment. If you wish to join a second u3a you do not need to pay the National u3a subscription again so this amount can be deducted from the second membership fee. Hence it will only cost £4 per person to be able to access any groups or activities run by Sheffield.
